Description
Dumbledore’s Army (commonly known as the DA) was a secret student organization founded at Hogwarts in 1995 by Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Created in defiance of Dolores Umbridge’s refusal to teach practical Defense Against the Dark Arts, the group trained students in defensive magic and combat spells. Named in honor of Albus Dumbledore — whom the Ministry of Magic feared was building a private army — the DA became a genuine resistance force during the Second Wizarding War.
History
The DA was formed during the 1995-1996 school year when Umbridge’s Ministry-approved curriculum left students dangerously unprepared. Members met secretly in the Room of Requirement, where Harry taught them spells ranging from Expelliarmus to the Patronus Charm. The group was eventually discovered and disbanded, but reformed in 1997 under the leadership of Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley, and Luna Lovegood when Death Eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow were installed at Hogwarts.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, DA members formed a crucial part of the defense, fighting alongside the Order of the Phoenix and Hogwarts staff.
