Description
Dolores Umbridge is a sadistic, authoritarian witch whose sweet, simpering exterior conceals a deeply cruel nature. She is obsessed with rules, order, and blood purity, and she wielded bureaucratic power with ruthless efficiency.
Background
Umbridge rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Magic to become Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic. During Harry Potter’s fifth year, she was installed at Hogwarts as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and later High Inquisitor, where she terrorized students and staff alike with her Educational Decrees and her use of a blood quill as punishment. Her tenure at the school was marked by censorship, cruelty, and a systematic undermining of any effort to prepare students for the real threat of Voldemort’s return.
History
When Voldemort’s Death Eaters infiltrated the Ministry of Magic, Umbridge thrived under the new regime. She eagerly ran the Muggle-Born Registration Commission, a body tasked with persecuting Muggle-born witches and wizards. Under her direction, innocent people were stripped of their wands, subjected to sham trials, and sent to Azkaban to face the Dementors — a fate she administered with evident satisfaction.
Following Voldemort’s defeat at the Battle of Hogwarts, Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt ensured that Umbridge did not escape justice. She was arrested, tried, and convicted for her crimes against Muggle-borns during the war. Umbridge was sentenced to life in Azkaban. However, since Shacklebolt had removed the Dementors from Azkaban as one of his first acts as Minister, her imprisonment — while permanent — was not nearly as horrific as the suffering she had inflicted on her victims.
