Description
Azkaban is the wizarding world’s most feared prison, located on a remote, barren island in the North Sea. It is guarded by Dementors, creatures of darkness that feed on human happiness and hope, making escape virtually impossible and imprisonment a fate many consider worse than death.
History
The island was originally discovered and claimed by Ekrizdis, a 15th-century dark wizard of considerable power. Before his arrival, the island had no infrastructure whatsoever—it was a desolate, wind-scoured rock in the open sea. Ekrizdis placed concealment charms over the island, hiding it from both magical and non-magical detection.
From this hidden stronghold, Ekrizdis lured Muggle sailors to the island, where he tortured and murdered them. Through these dark experiments—whether unwittingly or by deliberate intent—Ekrizdis created the first Dementors, beings born from concentrated suffering and dark magic.
When Ekrizdis eventually died, his concealment charms deteriorated and faded. The island, along with its infestation of Dementors, was discovered by the wider wizarding world. Rather than destroy the fortress or attempt to eliminate the Dementors, the Ministry of Magic eventually converted the site into a prison, exploiting the very creatures Ekrizdis had spawned as its wardens. Azkaban has served as the primary wizarding prison ever since, its reputation for madness and despair preceding it wherever witches and wizards speak of justice—or its absence.
