Description

A 15th century dark wizard and practitioner of the worst kinds of dark magic. Ekrizdis is perhaps the most vile wizard most people have never heard of — a figure whose madness and cruelty gave rise to one of the wizarding world’s most dreaded institutions: Azkaban.

Background

Little is known about Ekrizdis’s origins or early life. What is certain is that by the time he journeyed out into the North Sea, he was already deeply immersed in dark magic and likely already mad. His discovery of the remote island that would become Azkaban provided him with the perfect stage for his depravity.

History

Upon discovering the island in the North Sea, Ekrizdis placed powerful concealment charms over it, hiding it entirely from the outside world. In this isolation, he lured muggle sailors to the island, where he tortured and murdered them using the darkest magic at his disposal. The nature and scale of his atrocities are not fully recorded, but they were sufficient to leave a permanent stain on the very fabric of the place.

Whether through deliberate intent or as an unintended consequence of the concentrated suffering and dark magic permeating the island, Ekrizdis is believed to have been responsible for the creation of the first Dementors. These entities — beings that feed on human happiness and can consume a person’s very soul — emerged from the darkness Ekrizdis cultivated.

Ekrizdis himself descended into total insanity before his death. When he finally died, the concealment charms he had placed over the island faded, revealing both Azkaban and its Dementor inhabitants to the wider wizarding world. The Ministry of Magic, rather than attempting to destroy the Dementors, eventually repurposed the island as a prison, using the Dementors as guards — a decision that would be debated for centuries.
