Description
Minerva McGonagall is the Headmistress of Hogwarts, having assumed the position in 1998 following the end of the Second Wizarding War. A stern but deeply fair Scottish witch, she is one of the most accomplished Transfiguration masters of her generation and a registered Animagus, capable of transforming into a silver tabby cat. Her sharp intellect, unwavering moral compass, and fierce protectiveness of her students have defined her decades-long career at the school.
Background
McGonagall served as Head of Gryffindor House and Transfiguration professor for many years before becoming Headmistress. She was a key member of the Order of the Phoenix during both Wizarding Wars, standing firm against Voldemort and his Death Eaters at every turn. As Headmistress, she has dedicated herself to rebuilding Hogwarts into a place of safety and learning once more. Among her most significant post-war decisions, she lifted the curse on the Defence Against the Dark Arts position (which Voldemort had placed decades earlier) and brought in a new generation of professors, including Neville Longbottom as Herbology teacher. She also allowed students who missed their seventh year due to the war — such as Hermione Granger and Dean Thomas — to return and complete their education.
History
McGonagall fought valiantly in the Battle of Hogwarts, personally dueling Voldemort alongside Horace Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt. For her courage and service, she was awarded the Order of Merlin, First Class, and was later featured on a Chocolate Frog card. In the years since, she has made it a tradition to honor those lost every year on the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, ensuring that the sacrifices of Albus Dumbledore, Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and so many others are never forgotten.
