Description
Horace Slughorn is a pure-blood wizard and former Potions Master at Hogwarts. Jovial, well-connected, and fond of comfort, Slughorn is best known for his “Slug Club,” a collection of students he cultivated for their talent, connections, or potential for future greatness. Beneath his genial exterior, he carried one of the war’s most consequential secrets.
Background
Slughorn served two stints as Potions professor at Hogwarts. A skilled potioneer and capable wizard, he preferred influence and comfort over open conflict. His Slug Club alumni included many prominent figures in the wizarding world, and Slughorn took pride in the network of connections he had built over decades of teaching.
Despite his affable nature, Slughorn possessed a keen eye for talent and ambition, which made his greatest failure all the more devastating.
History
During his first tenure at Hogwarts, a young Tom Riddle approached Slughorn after a Slug Club dinner and asked about the theoretical possibility of creating not one but six Horcruxes, splitting the soul into seven pieces. Slughorn, flattered by the brilliant student’s attention, was horrified by the question but nonetheless provided information about the nature of Horcruxes. Riddle used this knowledge to pursue immortality through the darkest of magic.
Slughorn carried tremendous guilt about this conversation for decades. He tampered with his own memory of the event, creating a falsified version that obscured the critical details. He went into hiding when Albus Dumbledore began seeking the truth.
Eventually, Harry Potter convinced Slughorn to share the true, unaltered memory. This revelation was crucial to Dumbledore’s understanding of how many Horcruxes Voldemort had created and became a turning point in the effort to destroy them.
Slughorn returned to Hogwarts and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, dueling Voldemort himself alongside Minerva McGonagall and Kingsley Shacklebolt.
Post-War
Following the war, Slughorn continued teaching Potions at Hogwarts and served as Head of Slytherin House. However, he had always been reluctant to return to full-time teaching — Albus Dumbledore had practically dragged him out of retirement — and the post-war years took their toll. By 2004, Slughorn stepped back from daily classes, citing a desire to focus on “private research and personal correspondence” (widely understood to mean his Slug Club network, fine wines, and long afternoons by the fire). Headmistress McGonagall hired Bixby Wizzlethorpe as his replacement.
Slughorn remains connected to Hogwarts through his alumni network and occasional visits, but he no longer teaches.
