Description

Merlin is the most famous wizard in recorded history. A figure of legend in both the wizarding and Muggle worlds, his name is synonymous with magical excellence. In everyday wizarding speech, his name is commonly used as an exclamation (“Merlin’s beard!”).

Background

Despite widespread Muggle mythologizing that places Merlin in various fantastical contexts, the wizarding world knows him as a historical figure who attended Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Slytherin House. This fact is a point of pride for members of that house, though it surprises many who associate Slytherin primarily with dark magic.

Merlin is featured on Chocolate Frog cards, one of the most collectible series in the wizarding world, alongside notable figures such as Albus Dumbledore and Gringott.

History

Merlin founded the Order of Merlin, originally an organization dedicated to opposing the dark arts. Over the centuries, the name evolved into a prestigious award bestowed by the Ministry of Magic for acts of outstanding bravery or achievement. The Order of Merlin is granted in three classes: First Class (gold medal, for acts of outstanding bravery or distinction), Second Class (silver, for achievement or endeavor beyond the ordinary), and Third Class (bronze, for contributions to knowledge or entertainment).

Many of the greatest witches and wizards in history have been recipients, and it remains the highest honor the wizarding world can bestow.
