Description
Lily Potter (nee Evans) was a Muggle-born witch of exceptional talent, mother of Harry Potter, and wife of James Potter. Her act of sacrificial love became one of the most significant moments in wizarding history, providing her infant son with a protection that Voldemort could neither comprehend nor overcome.
Background
A Gryffindor House student at Hogwarts, Lily was regarded as one of the most gifted witches of her generation, particularly skilled in Potions and Charms. She was the childhood friend of Severus Snape, having grown up near him in Cokeworth. Their friendship ended during their time at Hogwarts as Snape was drawn to the Dark Arts and pureblood supremacist ideology. Despite this, Snape loved Lily for the rest of his life.
Voldemort himself attempted to recruit Lily to his cause, recognizing her considerable abilities. She refused.
History
After graduating from Hogwarts, Lily married James Potter and joined the Order of the Phoenix. Together they defied Voldemort three times, as foretold by The Prophecy.
When the Potters went into hiding, they were betrayed by Peter Pettigrew. On October 31, 1981, Voldemort came to Godric’s Hollow. After killing James, Voldemort offered Lily the chance to step aside, doing so at Severus Snape’s request. She refused, choosing to die rather than abandon her son. This act of willing sacrifice invoked an ancient magical protection that caused Voldemort’s Killing Curse to rebound when cast at Harry Potter, destroying the Dark Lord’s body.
Lily’s sacrificial protection continued to shield Harry for years afterward, residing in his blood and anchored by the home of his mother’s blood relatives.
Lily is deceased.
