Description

The Hogwarts Founders were the four witches and wizards who established Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 993 AD. Driven by what the Sorting Hat described as “the self-same yearning to make the world’s best magic school,” they built the school in a secret location in the Scottish Highlands during a dangerous era when magical folk faced widespread persecution from Muggles. Powerful enchantments were cast to conceal the school from non-magical eyes, protections that endure to this day.

The school crest bears the motto “Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus”---Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon.

The Founders

  • Godric Gryffindor - Valued bravery, courage, and chivalry above all other qualities. He was the closest friend of Salazar Slytherin before their bitter falling out over the admission of Muggle-born students. His legacy lives on through Gryffindor House and the Sword of Gryffindor.

  • Rowena Ravenclaw - Valued wit, learning, and wisdom. She is credited with naming the school “Hogwarts” after a dream in which a warty hog led her to a cliff by a lake, and she may have chosen the school’s location based on this vision. Her daughter Helena later became the Grey Lady, the ghost of Ravenclaw House.

  • Salazar Slytherin - Valued ambition, cunning, and resourcefulness. A pure-blood supremacist, Slytherin grew increasingly hostile toward the admission of Muggle-born students. After the other three founders rejected his demand that all houses admit only pure-bloods, he departed the school---but not before secretly constructing the Chamber of Secrets deep beneath the castle. His legacy haunts Slytherin House to this day.

  • Helga Hufflepuff - Valued hard work, loyalty, and fair play. Unlike the other founders, Hufflepuff welcomed all students regardless of background or bloodline, believing that every young witch and wizard deserved the opportunity to learn. Her inclusive philosophy is the foundation of Hufflepuff House.

History

For a short time after the school’s founding, the four worked together in harmony, each selecting students who embodied their personal values. However, Slytherin’s anti-Muggle rhetoric eventually caused an irreparable rift. He demanded that the school refuse admission to anyone not of pure magical blood. When Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff rejected his views, Slytherin left Hogwarts for good.

The departure of Slytherin marked the end of the Founders’ era, but the institution they built has endured for over a thousand years, educating generations of witches and wizards and standing as one of the finest magical schools in the world.

Current Status

The Hogwarts Founders have been dead for roughly a millennium, but their influence pervades every aspect of the school. The four houses that bear their names continue to sort students by the values each founder prized, the Sorting Hat they enchanted still sings its songs each year, and their artifacts---the Sword of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Slytherin’s Locket, and Hufflepuff’s Cup---remain objects of immense historical and magical significance.
