Description
Rowena Ravenclaw was one of The Hogwarts Founders and the founder of Ravenclaw House. She valued wit, learning, and wisdom above all other qualities, selecting students who demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a love of knowledge.
Background
Ravenclaw was renowned as the most brilliant witch of her age. She is credited with naming Hogwarts after a dream in which a warty hog led her to a cliff by a lake. It is believed she may have also chosen the school’s location in the Scottish Highlands based on this same dream.
Her most famous possession was a diadem said to enhance the wisdom of its wearer, one of the most powerful magical artifacts ever created.
History
Rowena Ravenclaw’s later life was marked by tragedy. Her daughter, Helena Ravenclaw, stole the diadem and fled the country, driven by jealousy of her mother’s fame and a desire to surpass her. Rowena, heartbroken, sent the Bloody Baron to find Helena, but he killed her in a rage when she refused to return. Ravenclaw reportedly died of a broken heart shortly after.
Helena Ravenclaw became the Grey Lady, the ghost of Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts. Centuries later, Tom Riddle charmed and coerced Helena’s ghost into revealing the diadem’s hiding place in a forest in Albania. Riddle retrieved the diadem and transformed it into one of his Horcruxes, later hiding it in the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts.
The diadem was destroyed during the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
Rowena Ravenclaw is deceased.
