Description

A wand of elder wood, fifteen inches long, with a core of Thestral tail hair. It is unadorned and ancient, its surface bearing the marks of countless centuries. Despite its plain appearance, it thrums with a power that even untrained wizards can sense. It is said to be the most powerful wand in existence, capable of feats of magic impossible with any other wand and able to conquer all others in combat.

History

The Elder Wand is one of the three Deathly Hallows, and according to the legend of the Three Brothers, it was the first Hallow created. The tale holds that Death himself fashioned the wand from an elder tree on the bank of a river and gave it to Antioch Peverell, the eldest of three brothers, as a reward for cheating Death. Antioch had asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence — a wand worthy of a wizard who had conquered Death.

The Peverell brothers were born in the late 11th or early 12th century, though the true origins of the Elder Wand may stretch back far earlier than the legend suggests. Some scholars believe the brothers were simply exceptionally gifted wizards who created the Hallows themselves, and that the tale of Death was embellishment added over generations.

True to its nature, the Elder Wand has left a bloody trail through history. Antioch was murdered in his sleep the very night he boasted of his unbeatable wand, and each subsequent owner won it through conquest, treachery, or murder. The wand’s allegiance passes only to the one who defeats its current master, making it a prize that invites violence.

Within the symbol of the Deathly Hallows, the Elder Wand is represented by the vertical line.
