Inferi

Description

Inferi are corpses that have been reanimated through dark magic to serve a dark wizard’s bidding. They are not truly alive, nor are they undead in the traditional sense — they possess no will, no thought, and no soul. They are puppets, animated entirely by the magic of the caster who created them, carrying out orders with mindless, relentless obedience.

Inferi are creatures of darkness, and as such they are vulnerable to fire and light. Flames are the most effective weapon against them, as they will recoil from heat and can be destroyed by sustained fire. Without fire, they are extremely difficult to stop, as they feel no pain and cannot be reasoned with.

Background

Creating Inferi is considered one of the foulest acts of dark magic. The practice desecrates the dead and is universally condemned by the wizarding community.

Voldemort made extensive use of Inferi during his rise to power. Most notably, he stationed an army of them within a hidden cave to guard Slytherin’s Locket, one of his Horcruxes. Regulus Black was killed by these Inferi when he attempted to retrieve the locket and destroy it, sacrificing himself in the process.
